Welcome to Port Royal

Port Royal is one of the top luxury waterfront communities in the United States. Port Royal is the most exclusive place to be in the country, long sought after by the top business magnates, CEOs and celebrities. Located with the Gulf of Mexico to the west and Naples Bay to the east, and with Gordon Pass to the south, this lavish and pristine community is home to the finest custom built luxury homes in the Naples, Florida.

John Glen Sample, a retired advertising executive from Chicago was the visionary who developed the Florida's wealthiest community, today known as Port Royal. He came to Naples in 1938 at the age of 46 on recommendation of a friend after finding the Palm Beach "too flashy". Sample longed for a relaxed atmosphere which he found in this part of Naples, says his son Joe Sample. Within a few days John Sample bought an unused swampland in the southern part of Naples and made it his goal to make that area into the finest place in the world to live.

After buying his first piece of land in 1938, he kept acquiring small parcels of land until 1950 that eventually totaled up to about two square miles. John Sample commissioned a well-known architect of that time, Howard Major to design the master plan for Port Royal. Major was given just one goal, to turn the area into a luxurious and community-centric location. He succeeded, as is seen by the area’s extreme popularity today. The estate homes in this area feature grand designs, popular amenities, and gourmet dining experiences. Making the place an absolute paradise for those who want a luxury lifestyle.

Major themed the development after the Jamaican port town. Major designed the three model houses for the Port Royal development, Sample’s own house and the Trinity-by-the-Cove Episcopal Church. The name Port Royal is attributed to a legendary Jamaican city of carousing pirates, which reflected the spirited personality that John Sample had. He was committed to create a community designed his way and populated by the people he liked.

According to many old time Naples residents and business professionals, John Sample was very blunt and intolerant of people who did not think as he did. So, after 12 years, in the late 1950s, when the Port Royal Club was opened up the membership to the club was only possible with written approval by Sample and his wife. This continued for many years and there was zero chance of buying any property in the Port Royal community without their approval. Things did change a little after the death of John Glen Sample in 1971, but to this day the acceptance to the Club is an honor available to only a select few.

To sum it up, the Port Royal is considered the ultimate community in Southwest Florida and is the very definition of luxury Florida living and lifestyle. A paradise conceived and over decades it has matured into the most desirable location in the country. The community has established a standard of excellence and elegance that is unmatched.
